Caring for Creation

The Creation Care Committee at Family of Christ is working to create an eco-friendly culture in our building. Since we started meeting in the spring of 2007 we've...

  • Started composting! A new waste hauler is picking up our compostables each week, and the amount of trash we are sending to the landfill is going down.
  • Had Xcel Energy do an Energy Assessment and implemented many of the energy- and money-saving suggestions in that report, including the installation of a Saver's Switch, with an estimated annual savings of $1,260.
  • Had Minnesota Waste Wise conduct a Waste Audit.
  • Investigated the cost-effectiveness of changing out light bulbs in the sanctuary and placing motion sensors on other lights to save energy.
  • Researched buying more recycled paper for our paper needs and discussed reduction in our use of paper.
  • Installed new recycling and waste stations throughout the building to increase recycling.
  • Stopped using Styrofoam products for our food and beverage service.
  • Worked on the wording of a green motto. ("Making Disciples Making a Difference, Caring for Creation" is one version that's been suggested.)
  • Researched the possibilities of harvesting wind and solar power to reduce our carbon footprint as a congregation and save money our utility bills.
  • Started offering green tips in the Creation Care Corner of Family News each week.
  • Investigated local interfaith and Lutheran groups dedicated to greening up local congregations.
  • Installed a Vend-a-Miser to cycle down energy consumption on our soft drink machine.
  • Re-timed our exterior lights to save energy as the seasons change.
  • Offered reusable grocery bags that help us all to save trees and raise environmental awareness in our communities.
