Summer Mission Trips
Summer 2010 Mission Trips
Registration is going on now for next summer's amazing mission trips! An informational brochure and registration forms are available either in the church narthex or print out the
registration Form (pdf).
Duluth, MN (waiting list) (Grades 6-8)
July 25-31, 2010
Duluth, Minnesota has all the amenities of a big city, but offers the simple pleasures and relaxed pace of a smaller town. The scenic shores of Lake Superior offer a beautiful setting to bask in the sun. While the city has been consistently recognized as a great place to live, this is not the case for all residents. There still are those who struggle with poverty. By working alongside local social service organizations and reaching out to the elderly and children, your group will have a unique opportunity to shine the light of Christ into the darker parts of this city. Following our work of service, we will spend two days (Friday and Saturday) exploring some of the beautiful area surrounding Duluth.
El Salvador & Guatemala (Youth who have completed their junior year in high school and participated in a previous mission trip, and Adults)
June 16-26, 2010
For eleven days in June, adults and high school students will walk in friendship and solidarity with the Lutheran Church of El Salvador. We will learn how the legacy of the civil war impacts the building of peace in today's El Salvador. Enjoy amazing hospitality, participate in a work project, meet your sponsored student, and even climb a volcano!
Blackfeet Reservation, Montana (Grades 9-12)
July 25-31, 2010
Join us this summer as we travel near Glacier National Park to YouthWorks Blackfeet Reservation site! It covers 2.5 million acres in Northern Montana. The Blackfeet received their name as a result of their darkened moccasins that were painted black or colored as they walked through ashes from prairie fires while searching for food. The site is located in the reservation community of Heart Butte, a town of 700 residents. Nearly 45% of the population lives below the poverty line, including 50% of those under age 18. While we are in Heart Butte, we will be participating in Kids Club: a hands-on program led by us offering games, crafts, skits, songs and lessons all designed to help kids learn about Jesus. We will be doing work projects like painting and repairing homes. We will then travel to Kalispell, MT and spend some time in Glacier National Park hiking, horseback riding, and whitewater rafting!
2009 Mission Trip Overview
We had a busy, fulfilling, faith-growing summer! Here are descriptions of the mission trips we took, along with blogs from those who were there (click on the mission trip title to read the blogs):
ELCA Youth Gathering Blog - New Orleans, Louisiana - July 20-27, 2009
Jesus Justice Jazz, the theme for the 2009 ELCA Youth Gathering, drew from the rich faith history, diverse cultures, and arts of New Orleans. It stretched our understanding of what it means to live in relationship & service with each other in the manner of Christ...for life...wherever we are! 36,000 youth & adults immersed themselves in worship, music, Bible study, service, learning, play, prayer, the witness of faithful leaders from around the world, reflection, caring for others, & new friendships.
Middle School Mission Trip Blog - Green Bay, Wisconsin - July 19-26, 2009
We partnered with YouthWorks, a Minneapolis-based organization whose core purpose is to provide life-changing, Christ-centered youth mission opportunities. In Green Bay, Wisconsin, we worked with local ministries and programs seeking to address the very basic needs of residents. We served at the Salvation Army, the Boys & Girls Club, Goodwill, a foodshelf and a nursing home.
El Salvador & Guatemala Blog - June 18-27, 2009
The Family of Christ mission trip to El Salvador and Guatemala was an intense experience of living and serving with our Lutheran friends and partners in ministry there, of walking in solidarity with the poor and disenfranchised, of learning for ourselves the power each of us has to make a difference in this world. The ten-day trip included visits to ministry sites, such as Hope House shelter for the homeless in San Salvador, Resurrection Church and its Subversive Cross, and the rural congregations of Pastor Matias. We met with Bishop Medardo Gomez, artist Christian Chavarria, Lutheran youth, and other church leaders, and worked with them in some hands-on projects. It was great to meet our sponsored students at their schools, and we made many new friends.
