School of Music Teachers
Melanie Hanson
I was raised in Plymouth, Minnesota. My sister and brother are 10 and 11 years older than me. I was the "only child" by fourth grade. My siblings still live in the cities and I have four nieces and nephews ranging from age 3 to 18. Looking back on my childhood, I did not realize how spiritual my parents were. We did not talk about being religious. My parents simply modeled to me through their works how to be a servant of God. They continue to be active in my birth-church and their community.
I earned my Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Concordia College in Moorhead (GO COBBERS!). I was set to find a teaching job in the Cities but I was offered a Graduate Assistantship along with my boyfriend (Mike) at Youngstown State University in Ohio. Mike and I were married after we graduated from Youngstown in July 2002. After that I decided to go all the way and get my Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Minnesota.
It wasn't until July '05, that I felt God leading me into church music. The very day I first heard Him (or listened) I left a message on Pastor Nate's machine asking about the Music Director position here. About a month and several prayers later I accepted this position.
In the spring of 2007, I sang with The National Lutheran Choir as a first soprano. I continue to perform throughout the cities for special events and concerts on the violin.
We have been blessed with three beautiful children. Anna Elizabeth (11/05/04), Matthew Karle (8/18/06), and Jacob Benjamin (1/21/08). They enjoy being a part of our faith community at Family of Christ.
